Most moving-day stress doesn’t come from the move itself — it comes from the admin nobody scheduled. Redirecting mail, disconnecting the internet, updating your licence address: none of it is hard, but all of it has lead times, and Sydney movers get booked out weeks ahead in peak season (December–February and around the end of each month). This is the timeline we actually give our own customers, worked backwards from moving day.
6–8 weeks before: lock in the date
- Book your removalist now if you can — the last week of any month is the busiest in Sydney because most leases turn over then. If your date is flexible, a mid-month weekday booking is usually cheaper and easier to secure.
- Start an inventory of anything oversized — pianos, pool tables, gym equipment, large fish tanks — so your removalist can quote accurately and bring the right gear on the day.
- If you’re renting, give notice according to your lease terms now — NSW standard leases usually require 14–21 days’ written notice, longer for fixed-term breaks.
4 weeks before: the paperwork that actually has lead times
- Redirect your mail via Australia Post’s mail redirection service — it can take up to a week to activate, so don’t leave it until the final days.
- Book your NBN/internet transfer. New connections can take 1–2 weeks depending on the technology type at the new address (FTTP is usually fast; a new HFC or fixed wireless connection can take longer) — this is the task people forget most often and then spend their first week without internet.
- Notify electricity and gas providers of your move-out and move-in dates so there’s no gap — or unexpected overlap — in supply.
- Start using up frozen and perishable food so there’s less to transport or waste.
2 weeks before: start packing non-essentials
- Pack out-of-season items, books, decorations, and anything you won’t touch before the move.
- Label boxes by room, not by contents — “Kitchen — non-fragile” tells the removalist where it goes faster than a general inventory list.
- Update your address with your bank, employer, Medicare, and the NSW driver’s licence/vehicle registration system (myRTA) — you have a legal window to update your licence address after moving, but doing it now means one less thing to remember later.
- If you’re eligible to vote, update your enrolment on the AEC website — it takes two minutes and is easy to forget entirely.
1 week before: confirm everything in writing
- Confirm your booking time, address, and any access details (parking, lift bookings, stairs) directly with your removalist — not just via the original quote.
- If you’re leaving an apartment, confirm your building’s move-out requirements are locked in (see our apartment moving guide if that applies to you).
- Arrange care for kids or pets for moving day itself — an empty, chaotic house is stressful for both.
- Order any packing supplies you’re still short on: tape, box labels, mattress covers.
The day before
- Pack an “open first” box or bag: chargers, toiletries, medication, a change of clothes, kettle, and basic cutlery — anything you’d otherwise have to dig through boxes to find that night.
- Defrost and clean the fridge if it’s going with you.
- Do a final check of any storage areas people forget: the garage, the shed, under-stair storage, balcony cupboards.
- Charge your phone and confirm the removalist’s arrival window one last time.
Moving day
- Do a full walkthrough of every room, cupboard, and drawer before the truck leaves — it’s the last chance to catch anything left behind.
- Take a final meter reading for electricity and gas if you’re responsible for the handover.
- Hand over keys, garage remotes, and any access fobs as arranged with the agent or new owner.
